Sometimes Torquemada Does Have the Answer

In the city cathedral of Cesena, Italy, a “goth-rock couple”–whatever that is–were caught in a confessional having oral sex, and were promptly thrown into the local hoosegow, where they admitted to being atheists. Bishop Antonio Lanfranchi of Cesena-Sarsina called the incident “an outrage of notable proportions which bespeaks unutterable squalor” and started searching through the available Roman Catholic guidebooks for a ceremony that would presumably purify the confession box. Of course, I shouldn’t comment on this since I’m an American Protestant, but I think you could do a ceremony during which you castrated the male with a hot branding iron and then used the same iron to imprint “Atheist” on the butt of the female and that would pretty much purify the church of any atheist within a several-nation area who was thinking about doing the same thing.

Offtopic, here is an interesting upcoming book you guys might like to review.

Liberals, says Dr. Herzog, have become “confused and defensive” as a consequence of the successful evangelical promotion of great sex—“soulgasmic” sex—between married men and women. Says Herzog: “There has never been so much pressure on what we are ‘supposed’ to feel about our relationships, our sexual choices, and our desire to feel pleasure. We wonder constantly whether our sex lives could be better, or whether we’re doing something wrong, or abnormal or inadequate. This is a radical new development—it just wasn’t this way even fifteen years ago.”

How did the Religious Right score so many successes? Historian Dagmar Herzog argues that conservative evangelicals appropriated the lessons of the first sexual revolution far more effectively than liberals. With the support of a multimillion-dollar Christian sex industry, evangelicals crafted an astonishingly graphic and effective pitch for the pleasures of “hot monogamy”—for married, heterosexual couples only. This potent message enabled them to win elections and seduce souls, with disastrous political consequences.
